Artist Statement

I was a quiet child who always wondered about the world around me, figuring out how it worked and asking deep, challenging questions. I was naturally drawn to art and how it is created. I remember going to the Philadelphia Art Museum and being captivated by this new world. Instantly, I knew I wanted to do that; the way I saw the world and the thoughts running through my mind could only be expressed visually. I wanted to show the world what was on my mind.

My work reflects my passion, pain, and growth. It's a testament that we all go through challenging times and are never alone in our struggles. Art is my therapy, a way to delve into my feelings and heal from my traumas. Some of these moments are difficult to discuss, so I often sprinkle a touch of humor into my work. This light-hearted approach can make even the most uneasy topics easier to express and discuss, fostering a sense of comfort and understanding.

Most of my work tells a story, a glimpse into my life. My life growing up as a sheltered child. My love-hate relationship with the military and food. My journey to get closer to God. My life as a mother of two children. Lastly, my life as a black Jamaican-American woman figuring out her way in this world. Since I’m a jack-of-all-trades, I have no desire just to paint; I want to use other mediums to express my thoughts. Some of my thoughts cannot be confined to a canvas but might be perfect as a sculpture, book art, or an illustration. My detailed rendering still leaves room for the imagination. There is so much I want to tell the world, and there are so many people I want my work to inspire and touch. I hope I’ll live long enough to do what God placed me on this earth to do.
